The fork in the road project was initiated by three futurists who all see the next 10 years as one of the most critical and historic times in all history. We came together to discuss the future on Zoom late last year and all agreed that the work of the great R. Buckminster Fuller, not only shaped our futurist practices but was deeply insightful for the decade we are now in.

Fuller charged humanity to create an “Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth” back in the late 1960s. Of course we didn’t. He then wrote another masterpiece: “Utopia or Oblivion: the…

First, a thank you to all the people who have purchased the just released paperback version of my latest book. Clearly many people are realizing that they are in various states of cognitive dissonance. It is the state we will be in for much of this decade.

Second, this is the first of several columns that will largely be excerpts from the book. Below is the Introduction. Hopefully it might prompt you to take a deeper look into why we will be experiencing more cognitive dissonance than ever before in our lives.

Introduction

“The 2020s is and will be the…

COVID-19 has changed the workplace forever. The 2020s decade will be a time when tranformation in the workplace and the concept of work will undergo huge change and alteration.

Think back to January 2020 and remember what you thought reality was and what you expected for the year based upon that belief. The reality dramatically changed due to COVID-19. Back then people commuted to physical offices and other places of work. Then, for those working in offices, the virus drove us to work remotely using such technologies as Zoom.

Now that we are vaccinating Americans at a stunningly rapid pace…

In an earlier column here I introduced both the concept of cognitive dissonance and my latest book about it. When I wrote that column, I had just published the eBook version of the book for the promotional price of $2.99. I did this to allow followers and readers of mine an opportunity to get the new book at a low price. In addition, a purchase of any book from Amazon allows people to post a review of the book on the Amazon book page.

Well, in the first two weeks, this book was the second fastest selling book I have…

Note to readers: This is a unique but powerful vision from Martin, an early #forkintheroadproject signatory

Enough already!

The significant problems we’re facing aren’t being solved: Pandemics attack us, ice caps melt, terrorism continues, millions suffer drought and famine, and the threat of nuclear weapons hangs over our heads.

Have you ever had the thought that we as individuals can’t make any impactful difference, not just in making these situations better, but in ending them. One person can’t really make a difference. One person can’t take on a suffering — war, hunger, disease — and end it…

[Note to readers: I have been AWOL here for the past few weeks as I had to finish the last draft of this latest book of mine. I am back to regular posting here. Thank you!]

The 2020s will be a decade of cognitive dissonance. We will all experience more cognitive dissonance in the 2020s than in any other time of our lives.

Cognitive dissonance is the conflict between what one thinks reality is and what it actually is. So, definitions and quotes:

Here is Webster:

- psychological conflict resulting from incongruous beliefs and attitudes held simultaneously.

The phrase “Save the Planet” has become a mantra for environmentalists everywhere. Unfortunately, it is both a phrase that shows ignorance of the earth and something that conveys a huge, practically impossible task: the saving of an entire planet.

People have appropriated this phrase to show they are “green”. Worse, corporations have used this phrase for outrageous “greenmailing”; the usage of an environmental message to try to convince customers that they are working to face the climate crisis. An example I highlight in this brand new TEDx talk is that of hotels. How many times have you checked into…

Many of the people who have heard about the #forkintheroadproject have asked why we have initiated it. The statement most frequently made goes something like this: “Why are you guys trying to reinvent the wheel? There are many global groups that are already working on the need for massive global change.”

As one of the initiators of the fork project I would like to clarify this misconception about redundancy. First the three initiators, and a good number of initial signers and first members of the #forkintheroadproject collective are futurists. We all see into the future. We all understand the longer-term…
